Become a Wholistic Care Volunteer

The Crossroad Wholistic Care Volunteer Program provides the opportunity for volunteers to work alongside our health care staff and providers to help us address the social and spiritual aspects of our patients’ lives. This is known as “upstream care” – our effort to identify and address the sources, and not just the results, of a patient’s health challenges.

As a Wholistic Care Volunteer (WCV), you will be working in a clinical setting and with an interdisciplinary team of our staff, including medical assistants (MAs) and providers (physicians, nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants). You will also work, often indirectly, with our care coordinators (who are part of our population health team) and our chaplain (who helps lead our spiritual care efforts).

As a faith-based organization, we strive to treat the whole person – body, mind and spirit. WCVs will receive thorough training before beginning to work with patients.  Following a detailed script, WCVs will ask patients questions that help determine if they are challenged by nonmedical issues that affect their health, such as housing insecurity, transportation issues and food insecurity. WCVs also ask patients about any faith, religious or spiritual background they may have, and can offer resources to support patients in their faith.

Commitment

The time commitment for this program varies and is open to discussion. We do ask that volunteers commit to a regular schedule based on the needs of WCV program. Ideally, this is a minimum commitment of one 2-hour shift per month for six months.

Requirements

This position is designed for volunteers who identify as Christians. If you do not identify as a Christian, Crossroad still welcomes your involvement; please see other volunteer opportunities we offer.

WCVs must complete a thorough training provided by the Church Partnership Coordinator before beginning to work with patients. This includes a single session of 2-3 hours plus additional training as needed. Comprehensive training materials will be provided.

WCVs are not required to attend regular meetings. However, they will follow up with our WCV Coordinator as needed, for quality assurance and as changes in resources occur, and for a minimum of an annual check-in.  WCVs should be responsive to phone or email communication as needed.
